At Sawyer we have the privilege of working with hundreds of inspiring educators around the country. The curricula always foster enriching atmospheres for children of all ages to discover their love of learning and grow as people.

We got the opportunity to chat with Gassia Joulakian, owner and art educator at Petit Bizoo, which provides art classes and camps to children in LA. Their programs offer a variety of creative experiences that acquaint them with art principles, materials and techniques that will promote their aesthetic sensibilities, creative mind, and kinetic abilities. We spoke about the benefits of out-of-school enrichment activities, inspiring moments in and out of the classroom, and so much more.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! I’d love to hear a bit more about you and why you started your business.

My earliest memories of self-expression and self-awareness began with drawing. Growing up, I was fortunate to have the full support of my parents, but I had limited access to art classes. As I pursued my artistic education, I became aware of what I had missed as a child: How my curiosity to explore, create, and experience art had not been fully nurtured. Alongside this, I’ve always loved being around people, especially children, and creating spaces where they feel safe, seen, and encouraged. These experiences and passions ultimately led me to start this business.

Can you describe an inspiring moment you’ve had as an educator?

Ah, so many! When a student realizes they can achieve something and you see that moment when their face lights up. Or when a student discovers a different way of creating than the way I teach, it’s both humbling and inspiring. It’s a reminder that we are raising thinkers and creators.

What’s the most rewarding thing about teaching children?

One of the best surprises is when past students return to visit after years away. It’s happened a few times.

What’s one time a child surprised you and made your day?

One of the best surprises is when past students return to visit after years away. It’s happened a few times, and I just love it.

On a similar note, what’s the funniest thing a child has done in your class?

So many funny moments and laughter, cannot pin it on one situation or one child.

Why is after school/extracurricular enrichment and camp so important for children?

They create a sense of community and allow children to explore beyond what is offered in schools. Through after-school programs, kids discover their passions and develop confidence in their creativity.

How do you think children can discover their passions when they’re not in school or your programs?

When they are in nature outdoors and with great books!

You’re all set!
