The key things to consider when building a website for your small business

As you continue developing and growing your business, it’s paramount that you properly allocate time and resources toward elements that will have the greatest impact on visibility to your business.

So, what does that mean? It means that a website needs to be a priority. Luckily, anyone can build a website (and, a beautiful one for that matter). Gone are the days of coding from the ground up. With virtually every major company who offers web development, you can drag and drop templates to create the experience you want.

While there are many things to consider when building your business's website, we're going to outline just a few key things to consider. A successful website will ultimately be user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and secure. Let's get started!

Your website needs to be user-friendly

We've all visited sites that feel half-baked, confusing, cluttered, and/or difficult to navigate.

There are many ways a website's UX (user experience) can be negatively affected: from overcrowded text blocks to broken links, to misaligned graphics, just to name a few.

Your website should be both inviting and intuitive so that users will want to return. If you're building a childhood education/activity business, you'll also want your site to be friendly to various age groups.

Keeping your copy direct, playful, and with parents in mind is a good way to think about building your website!

Consider your budget

If you're working on a budget and will be developing the website on your own through popular template-based platforms like Squarespace or Wix, be sure to check out direct and indirect competitors' sites.

Compile a list of pros and cons for each. Reach out to colleagues, friends, and family, and ask them what they like and dislike about certain websites, and see if you can spot any patterns.

If you have a healthier budget, it could be beneficial to reach out to a website UX consultant to help guide you in developing a custom, UX-optimized site.

When you have your site built, be sure to test it with people before it goes live to gain insight into their experiences!

Your website needs to be aesthetically pleasing

This can seem like an obvious consideration, but we've come across too many websites that look like they’re from the 90s!

While your site doesn't need to be super highly designed, it does need to look and feel pleasant. The color palette you use, the font you select, the graphics you use, and the way you organize your information should all reflect your brand's sensibilities.

For example, if your business is focused on teaching children about music, you'll want to have a brightly colored, lively site that features graphics of young people enjoying playing musical instruments!

Seems fairly straightforward, right? It's always a good idea to explore your competition's sites to see what you can learn about their aesthetic decisions.

Be sure it's secure

Your visitors should always feel that their information and data are secure, particularly if you plan on having an e-commerce component to your site.

Your small business cannot afford to have liability concerns. Be sure to invest in website security software.
