What kind of pop-ups should you have on your site?

Often when people think of website pop-ups, they assume they’re irritating banners that disrupt your experience on a website. But that doesn’t need to be the case! Pop-ups can be informative, drive decision making, and be beneficial for customers — you just need to make sure you're creating the right kind of pop-up! From a business standpoint, using website pop-ups is the exact thing your company needs to increase the amount of foot traffic to your site.

We put together a list of pop-ups that you can consider using to drive meaningful actions from customers on your website.

1. Call to action

We're sure you've heard the speech before about why using a call to action (CTA) is essential to your company. A call to action is used as a way to persuade the customer to do something, whether that's purchasing a product or scheduling an appointment.

Whatever the purpose of your CTA is, you're not going to want to skip over the opportunity of using this kind of pop-up.

If you’re running a promotion, try creating a strong call to action that moves a customer and works to your benefit! Perhaps you want to add language like “book now” or “filling fast”. These can be in the form of a banner at the top of your site, and can drive action and intrigues.

2. Lightboxes

Lightboxes are exactly what they sound like — pop-ups that appear and dim whatever is in the background. Use this form of pop-up if you want to take the customer's attention off anything else, and give the main stage to your pop-up.

There are several ways that you can use a lightbox pop-up, like getting people to sign up for your newsletter or offering a promotion on site.

3. Floating Bar

Floating bars, also known as ‘hello bars’ are pretty similar to pop-ups. It’s a sticky bar that either sticks to the top, bottom, or the side of a web page. Regardless of whether a customer is scrolling, it remains in the same position. The main benefit of floating bars is that they’re not as intrusive as other pop-ups.

Because floating bars can be visible to users regardless of where they’re scrolling, they can offer better chances of engagement. Think of them like sticky notes on a fridge — they’re not invasive and won’t prevent visitors from engaging on your site.
